Case Modding

Summary

Especially diligent technical fans always try to adapt home computers, consoles and their software to their own ideas. This so-called “modding” can be done at different levels. Modifying the software and hardware of home consoles currently being produced and sold is not desired by the manufacturer. One exception is the case modding.

Only the case of a PC or console is modified, through craftsmanship or artistic work, to give the machine a distinctive appearance. Naturally, the devices are intended to remain functional. Home consoles present a particular challenge for case modders because their internal components are standardised and cannot be combined freely in the way modern home computer components can.

Since 2002, the German Casemodding Championship has crowned the most imaginative and beautiful casemods in Germany and presents them annually at Gamescom in Cologne.
