The End of Console Wars

Sega is the first manufacturer to introduce a sixth generation console with the Dreamcast, but after the previous flops, the beaten-up company no longer has the reserves to be able to withstand the soon-to-appear Ps2. Sony’s console is still the best-selling console, while Nintendo succeeds with the GameCube. Microsoft joins as a new console manufacturer, but apart from that, the field is clear: at the end of this generation, only the three companies that still dominate remain.

This marks the end of the console wars. The technology is now so standardized that differences between the machines no longer matter very much anyway, and generally consoles become more similar to PCs, through disks in the gigabyte range and online functions.

This also applies to the games; many no longer appear exclusively for a single console, but for PCs as well as for XBox, GameCube and Ps2.
