Generation 8
After unsuccessful attempts since the 1990s, eighth-generation consoles became true multimedia machines. As well as playing games, they served as living-room entertainment centres. They also offered social media functions, connecting players through numerous online features and allowing them to share gameplay on Facebook or Twitter.
All three consoles are built at least partially by the Chinese manufacturer Foxconn. The chip architecture of the three devices also resembles each other strongly and is no longer significantly different from that of a gaming PC. In many cases, the difference can only be expressed in a more comfortable handling for consoles.
Much more than half of all consoles sold are Ps4s, with Sony’s share in some markets ranging from 70 to over 90%.
