Gold miners and revolutionaries: Generation 5
The fifth generation of game consoles is characterized by numerous upheavals. Games in three-dimensional space become standard, CD-ROMs replace the modules that have been established for twenty years as a medium and allow complex film sequences, voice output and music in CD quality with their tens of times higher storage space.
Numerous manufacturers try to copy the success Sega has with the Mega Drive; never again are there so many different consoles on the market at the same time as in the fifth generation. Almost all are flops.
Sega herself speculates with the publication of Saturn and will no longer recover from this blow. Meanwhile, a failed collaboration between Nintendo and Sony leads Sony to develop its own console with PlayStation and to become the industry leader almost overnight.
