Edges
Summary
After the 64DD has been delayed several times, Nintendo is aware that it will be outdated technology at the time of its appearance, which cannot become a success. In order to comply with the announcements made, it will nevertheless be published, but only by mail order, and only in connection with the subscription of an online service called Randnet.
Randnet includes ideas that are ahead of their time: It is designed to provide online gaming, its own browser, an email system, a music streaming service, web magazines, game demos, downloadable content, user-generated content as well as the ability to chat with the Nintendo developers. Only a fraction of these offers are actually implemented.
The Randnet subscription also includes six games that are gradually sent to users.
With only 15,000 customers, the service is not profitable, which is why Nintendo announces the end of Randnet in October 2000. After only 15 months, the network will be shut down in February 2001.
