Smaller and smaller switches
Digital computers usually work with binary information: The values 0 and 1 stand for two distinct states. Electrical circuits process this information.
The Z3 by Konrad Zuse from 1941 works with relays. Tube calculators and transistor calculators stand for further development steps of digital computing technology.
Integrated circuits combine numerous transistors on a single chip. The reduction of the components allows for more compact devices and more complex circuits in a confined space.
