SMS and SLT from IBM
Summary
At the end of the 1950s, IBM created a modular system for minicomputers with the Standard Modular System (SMS). The cards have a standardized size of 114 × 67 mm with 16 pins and typically contain germanium transistors, resistors, capacitors and diodes. Thus they realize logical gates, amplifiers, etc.
IBM introduced Solid Logic Technology (SLT) for IBM System/360 in 1964. Transistors, diodes and resistors are placed on a chip; the components are visible on the silver lid. IBM achieves a higher execution speed with lower power consumption with the SLT components.
Other manufacturers also create modular systems that are the precursor of the highly integrated components. In the 1970s, the 7400 series of Texas Instruments begins and the proprietary modules disappear.
