Generations

The division into console generations helps to describe technical developments and temporal relationships. It is a simplistic historical order: devices of one generation do not have to appear simultaneously or offer the same technique or playing style.

The periods overlap. Manufacturers can continue to run older platforms while new devices appear. Even more powerful variants within a platform make the boundaries less clear. The generation data in the inventory list are therefore used for orientation.
