Ide Yosuke Meijin no Jissen Mahjong
Summary
Capcom released a mahjong game for Famicom in 1987. It is not the first Famicom implementation of the popular Asian board game, but the first that simplifies operation by a special controller. The original Famicom controller offers only eight direct, different input options (left, right, top, bottom, A, B, start, select), whereas the Mahjong controller offers 21, better accommodating the complex rules of the game.
The game is advertised with the then 31-year-old professional Mahjong player Ide Yosuke, who can also be seen as a cartoon on packaging and module.
Outside Japan, “Ide Yosuke, Master of the Battle Mahjong” (a translation of the title) does not appear. A version for the MSX2 home computer appears the following year. The controller is missing there, instead the game is controlled via the keyboard. In 1991 Capcom produced a sequel, again with a attached controller and also only for the Japanese market.
