PC-FX

Summary

The successor console of the PC Engine externally reminds of a PC tower, and in fact is intended to be able to expand it with additional hardware. Conversely, an extension with which PC-FX games can be played on conventional PCs appears.

The console fails due to bad timing. In 1992, when its technical development has already been completed, the PC engine still sells so well that the project will be stopped for two years. When the PC-FX appears at the end of 1994, it is outdated because it does not have a 3D processor. This makes it all the more suitable for cartoon sequences, and accordingly most of the 62 appearing games are based on anime series.

The PC-FX is therefore uninteresting for the international market – while the PC engine is distributed worldwide, its successor is only available in Japan. In the approximately three years that it is on the market, only 400,000 pieces are sold. NEC then ceases to develop new consoles.
