Small computer KC85/2
Summary
The KC 85 was a popular small computer from the former GDR. It was built by the VEB Mikroelektronik company “Wilhelm Pieck” in Mühlhausen. In schools in particular, the equipment was widely used. The system consists of the KC 85 as a basic device and extension assemblies (modules) as well as software made it complete. The KC 85 was available in four versions:
- KC 85/1 (almost identical successor of Z9001)
- HC 900 (later renamed KC 85/2)
- KC 85/3 and
- KC 85/4.
The U880, a Z80 clone, worked in all the machines.
The KC 85/1 was developed by VEB Kombinat Robotron Dresden, just like the KC 87, a later parallel development. The HC900, KC85/2, KC 85/3 and KC 85/4 are not “Robotron” computers, because they were produced by VEB Mikroelektronik, not by VEB Robotron-Messelektronik Dresden.
