Atari 1040ST

Summary
In April 1986, the Atari 1040ST joined the ST range, with a larger case and 1 MiB of RAM. Its introductory price in Germany was 3298 DM.
The computer quickly replaced the 520 series and, according to sales figures, the 1040ST was the most common Atari computer. In its larger housing, power supply and disk drive units are integrated, so that overall the space requirement is lower. The floppy drive can read and write on two sides.
In addition to the 1040ST, 1040STF and 1040STFM will appear with built-in RF modulator to connect to the TV in the following years.
The 1040ST’s hardware remained similar to its predecessors. It could not match the Amiga’s multimedia capabilities, but developed a loyal following in recording studios. The improved 1040STE appeared in 1989, with multimedia enhancements intended to win back market share from the Amiga. Compatibility problems were among the reasons it failed to achieve that success.
