Summary

In February 1984, IBM released the Portable Personal Computer, model 5155, as a portable version of its PC. It responded to the successful Compaq Portable with a cheaper machine. The carrying case contains an IBM PC/XT motherboard with an Intel 8088, 256 KB RAM expandable to 640 KB, one or two 360 KB 5.25-inch drives and a built-in 9-inch amber monitor. The installed CGA card can also display colour on an external monitor.

At around 14 kilograms, it is more “luggable” than portable. It has no battery. The launch price was US$4,225, and the IBM PC Convertible replaced it in April 1986.
