TurboGrafx-16 Entertainment SuperSystem

The TurboGrafx-16 Entertainment SuperSystem, or TurboGrafx, is the original version of the PC Engine. Technically, it is identical with this one, but has a larger and different colour housing (black). The TurboGrafx was released in the USA in August 1989, just two years after Japan’s release of the PC Engine.

Games for the console are delivered on a HuCard, an approximately credit card-sized module. However, the American and Japanese HuCards are not pin-compatible. With an import adapter, players in the USA can still play these HuCards. Japanese PC Engine consoles provided NEC and Hudson Soft with a special mechanism: If a player installs a US-HuCard, the PC Engine identifies it as “foreign” and refuses service. These country locks do not apply to CD-ROM games that can be played with many of the console variants.
