Summary

John Sculley is president and CEO of Apple Computer from 1983 to 1993. One of his favorite projects is Newton, a platform for a PDA (personal digital assistant) — the term Sculley himself introduced.

The development of the platform begins in 1987 and the first devices are launched in 1993. In addition to Apple, there are different licensees, such as Motorola, Sharp, Siemens, Digital Ocean, Harris. The MessagePad series and the eMate 300 of Apple are more well known.

Many Newton devices use the ARM 610 RISC processor. Their Newton OS operating system offers many distinctive features, but handwriting recognition is slow and unreliable. Market share declined after the inexpensive Palm Pilot appeared in 1996. Steve Jobs brought the platform to an end after returning to Apple Computer and closing unprofitable divisions.

The Newton series will end on February 27, 1998. In 2004 the works on the revolutionary iPhone will begin.
