AV Famicom

Summary

The AV Famicom is released in 1993 almost at the same time in Japan and the USA. It is technically almost identical with the original Famicom or the NES, but is stylistically oriented towards the current Super Famicom/Super NES at this time.

The hardware is slightly revised, so the controllers are now removable and the controllers themselves are more ergonomically designed. The rarely used microphone, which is located in the second controller of the Famicom, is omitted.

In the United States in particular, the NES-101 (alternatively also called “NES 2” or “Toploader”) and almost identical to the AV Famicom is now a sought-after collector’s item among players. The video recorder-like loading mechanism of the original NES damages cartridges over time, a danger that does not exist with the 101. In addition, the 101 lacks the lockout chip used to block unlicensed games. This makes third-party games and European modules playable without hardware modifications.
