Microelectronics advanced rapidly during the 1970s, and television sets became affordable for ordinary households. In 1972, the Magnavox Odyssey, developed by Ralph Baer – the father of home consoles, became the first game console on sale that could be connected to a home television. Thomas Gottschalk introduced the consoles to a wide audience in late 1977 on the television programme “Telespiele”.
The first generation of game consoles offers only a fixed set of games, as these devices have no CPU in the usual sense. The games are implemented using simple electronic circuits. Later, General Instrument developed the AY-3-8500 chip, which was used in thousands of consoles. Pong was among the most popular games, which is why these first-generation systems are commonly called Pong consoles.
The era of these dedicated consoles ended in the early 1980s, when consoles with 8-bit CPUs and interchangeable cartridges reached the market.
