NUON Player
Summary
The Nuon concept is a standard developed by VMLabs as early as 1995. It consists of equipping DVD players with a chipset, which makes it possible to use additional DVD functions (such as very comfortable back and forth of a movie), but also to play video games on the player.
After the first chipset was presented to the public in 1999 and various manufacturers of consumer electronics were offered for licensing, only 3 companies incorporated the technology into their devices.
In addition to Toshiba (two devices) and RCA (one device), Samsung produces most Nuon players. Sales are weakening right from the start, and after Samsung finally exits, VMLab’s insolvency is reported - the Nuon project has died after only three years. During this time eight different players appear. Only four DVD movies use the Nuon chipset, and only eight games are released. In addition, not all games are running on all Nuon players.
