Commodore PET 2001

Summary

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January 1977, American company Commodore presented the Commodore PET 2001 (Personal Electronic Transactor), a computer with an integrated monitor and keyboard. Its lead developer was Chuck Peddle, who had worked on the 6502 CPU and KIM-1 single-board computer.

The PET appeared in October of the same year and belongs to the first wave of commercial home computers. In the German mail order trade it initially cost 2,999 DM. The computer uses the MOS 6502 CPU (1 MHz clock rate) with, depending on the model, 4 KiB or 8 KiB RAM. Peripherals can be connected via an IEEE-488 bus. The device was a cheap alternative to Apple II, which can represent colors but no lowercase letters.

The computer was particularly successful in the field of education and industry, and was the reason for Commodores’ further success in the home computer market.
