Commodore SX-64

Summary

The Single Drive Executive 64 (SX-64) is a portable version of the popular C64, which Commodore launched in December 1983. It has a built-in 5 inch color screen and a 5 1⁄4 inch floppy drive, which is compatible with the VC1541. Originally, Commodore planned a dual-drive computer called Double Drive Executive 64 (DX-64), but since the device received only one drive, it came to the name SX-64. There is no demonstrable sale of the originally planned variant.

Unlike today’s portable devices, the SX-64 has no battery; it has to be connected to the power grid. With 10.5 kg the device is not a lightweight. However, according to the advertising text at the time, the device found space under an aircraft seat.

In the USA, the SX-64 was released in December 1983 for USD 995. In Germany, the device was available from spring 1984 for nearly DM 3000. Estimated 49,000 copies sold Commodore.
