Commodore VC 20 (VIC 20)

Summary

The Commodore VC 20 is, after the Commodore PET, the second computer of the American company Commodore. In addition, it is the first Commodore home computer with color representation. Its affordable price as well as user-friendly equipment make the VC20 an entry-level product at the time. This is how the device becomes a worldwide sales hit.

The semiconductor manufacturer MOS Technology, acquired by Commodore, develops the VC. The “VC” in the name stands for “people’s computers” — a marketing term for German-speaking countries. The international name “VIC” refers to the video chip of the VC20, the Video Interface Chip.

The VC20 is selling around 2.5 million times worldwide, initially at a price of almost 900 DM in Germany. Today, this computer is the first computer ever to sell more than a million times. The successor Commodore 64 (C64, bread box) is even more popular.
