PC Engine SuperGrafx

Summary
The PC Engine SuperGrafx, or SuperGrafx for short, is an enhanced version of the original PC Engine released exclusively in Japan. Its main differences are four times the RAM, an additional video processor chip and support for special SuperGrafx HuCards.
The SuperGrafx can be interpreted as the first attempt to adapt the PC Engine to new 16-bit systems at that time. It will be released in December 1989, a year after the release of the Sega Mega Drive in Japan and almost a year before the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Only seven games actually used the SuperGrafx’s improved hardware, making it a commercial failure for NEC and Hudson Soft. It is nevertheless compatible with all standard PC Engine HuCard cartridges and the later CD-ROM drives, although adapter cables are sometimes required. A SuperGrafx connected to a Super CD Rom² may look ungainly, but it can at least play every title released for the PC Engine family.
