Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

Summary

The Super NES is the last released system of the fourth generation of video game consoles.

The US launch marks the beginning of the next escalation stage of the Console War between Nintendo and Sega. In addition to well-appointed self-productions such as Super Mario World and F-Zero, the SNES scores especially with the implementation of Capcom’s fighting game Street Fighter II. Technically, it surpasses the Mega Drive. It offers eight-channel sound and is able to rotate, tilt, and continuously enlarge graphics levels.

Although it does not quite reach the sales figures of its predecessor, the SNES becomes the most successful console of its generation. While a planned CD-ROM extension is never produced, additional chips in the modules that allow complex 3D graphics, for example, keep SNES up to date with the latest technology. A large number of hits also ensure that the console remains relevant for years even after the introduction of the fifth generation machines.
