Summary

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is in direct competition with Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii in the year of its release. The first version on the market is initially still backward compatible with Playstation 2, but already a few months later this feature is no longer available due to economic considerations. Compatibility with the first PlayStation games, on the other hand, remains guaranteed throughout the entire life cycle of the console. The PS3 is significantly superior to the competition consoles in terms of their technical data and serves as a PC replacement for many players. In particular, the integration of a Blu-ray player turns out to be a successful strategy.

By 2016, Sony will be selling more than 85 million PlayStation 3 copies worldwide. This means that sales are far below those of the PS2 as the best-selling console of all time.
